The most famous nasi kandar stall in Ipoh located at the Yong Suan Coffeeshop on Jalan Yang Kalsom here has been ordered to close by health authorities.

The Kinta health department issued a notice to the operator of Perniagaan Nasi Kandar Ayam Merah, which has existed since 1955, to cease its operations with immediate effect until Nov 28 following a raid on the premises at 5pm Thursday.

It is learnt that the operating license of the stall, which sells the famous ‘nasi ganja’, nicknamed because of its “addictive” spicy curry and meats, was also revoked by the Ipoh City Council.

Datuk Bandar Datuk Roshidi Hashim said the joint raid was part of a scheduled raid with the other departments.

“The operator scored less points than needed and was ordered by the health department to cease operations for 14 days.

“The order was issued under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983 as the premise was deemed to be unclean and unhygienic,” said Roshidi.

According to an eyewitness, the stall operator and workers had refused to let the raiding officers into the kitchen and officials were forced to break down the door to get in.

It is common to find long lines of customers waiting to buy nasi kandar from the stall.
